The Sidna Allen House
|
In 1911 J. Sidna Allen and his wife, Bettie moved into the house which he had described as "the culmination of our dreams". One year later, Mr. Allen, who was one of the wealthiest men in the county, was involved in the shoot-out at the Carroll County Courthouse in Hillsville,Virginia. The eight-room Queen Anne style house is unique to the County in it's architecture and distinctive features, which included detailed woodworking, iron crestings, corbeled chimneys and a slate roof. The house and lands were taken by the State of Virginia and sold at auction after the Courthouse Tragedy. In 1926, Mr. Allen was pardoned by the Governor, but he and his family never returned to this beautiful house.

Levering Orchard (Hand Pick Your Own Fruit)
|
Levering Orchard was founded in 1908 by Ralph Levering. Legend has it that he grew tired of having to stoop for a living. He wanted to reach for the sky as he picked his fruit.
Levering Orchard was primarily an apple orchard until the 1970s when Sam Levering had a major insight -- the several cherry trees planted near his and Miriam's home drew flocks of pick-your-own customers just as surely as the multitudes of hungry birds. There were never enough cherries to meet demand. Today Levering Orchard's primary crop is cherries.
